New Children’s Book Explores Anti-Bullying Concepts:Monday at Jelly Roll Dog Park by Jennifer Schreiber, Illustrations by John LaFree and a Give-Away!

Peace on the planet begins with peace on the playground…and in the dog park!

Jelly Roll cover

In Monday at Jelly Roll Dog Park, it’s Monday and a new dog, Muttley, arrives at the New Orleans park all the way from “Minn-ee-a-po-lis”.  All Muttley wants to do is make friends, but the group of friends that he meets (Rex, Ginger, Champ, Princess and Buddy) are all pure bred dogs who have been coming to the park since they were puppies. Their group has been formed, and they are less than eager to offer an outsider admittance to their “exclusive” group. Especially one who came from a “dirty pound.”

The group of friends shun Muttley because he is not a pure bred dog, but is a mixture of many breeds, a mutt. Hence his name, “Muttley.”

Muttley is consoled and mentored by Jelly Roll’s guardian angel, Daisy Mae the bulldog. She’s a former friend of the “in-crowd” and helps Muttley navigate the pack’s standoffish bark and teaches them all an important lesson.

Through discovering his own strengths, Muttley is able to rise above the bullying and earn the respect of the other dogs.
Monday at Jelly Roll Dog Park was inspired by the desire to explore anti-bullying concepts through the exploits of dog characters easily understood by young children.
This 38-page children’s book is hard-covered,  large,  (even for an adult’s hands but I loved that, because it reminded ME of holding a large children’s book as a child, and for me, that increased its charm).
Along with teaching an important life lesson, which would serve as a perfect conversation starter between parents and little ones, and teachers and students, about how hurtful bullying can be  , the illustrations alone are reason enough to buy this book! They are SUPERB. When I opened the book, I said aloud, “this book is GORGEOUS!” The pages are glossy. Children and adults alike will be captivated.
As Daisy Mae says to Muttley: “Remember the Golden Rule,” said Daisy Mae. “Always treat others the way you would like them to treat you.”
An important lesson that often we adults forget as well!
Dakota and I give this marvelous book FOUR PAWS UP!! What a great holiday gift or anytime gift this would make!
