Completely charmed, and with a smile on my face, I read JJ the American Street Dog And How He Came To Live In Our House by Diane Rose-Solomon. I have reviewed many books, rarely a children’s book that teaches the importance of pet adoption, and the few I read prior to JJ The American Street Dog that DID reference pet adoption and were geared towards children, paled in comparison. THIS BOOK HAS IT ALL!

Written with children ages five to nine in mind, JJ The American Street Dog is the perfect vehicle to teach children not only about the importance of pet adoption, but that adopting a dog (or any other pet) is  a huge responsibility and commitment that should be viewed in terms of “forever.”

Author, Diane Rose-Solomon delivers the above message in terms that children can easily understand, but more importantly, she tells the story of JJ and how he was adopted, in a fun and heart-warming manner.

 JJ the American Street Dog and How He Came to Live in Our House, is the first book in a series, (I cannot wait to read the ensuing books!) for children ages five to nine.  The little ones will easily identify with six-year-old Maya who “has wanted a dog for as long as she can remember.” When her uncle finds a homeless puppy, (JJ), Maya begs to keep him. But her mom isn’t sure.

Does Maya get to keep JJ? I’ll never tell! You have to purchase the book to find out!

Along with being a charming story, this gem teaches kids and adults about animal homelessness, basic animal care, the importance of spaying and neutering your pet (worded appropriately for children), pet adoption and the unconditional love people get from their family pet.

The illustrations by Rachel Cellinese are bright, colorful, and energetic, they  help to make this already fabulous book, even more fabulous!

With a hard cover and only 31 pages long,  don’t let the fact that this is a quick read, (ideal for parents who read bedtime stories to their children, teachers who are looking for something both fun AND educational, children’s library reading groups and more!) fool you! This is a children’s book that not only educates the little ones about the importance of pet adoption/ownership,  it does so with charm, heart and much love!

About the Author

Diane Rose- Solomon, a Certified Humane Education Specialist, rescued the real JJ 17 years ago. This is her first book, and the first in the “JJ The American Street Dog” series. Ms. Rose- Solomon lives in Los Angeles with her husband, two children and two rescued dogs, Gonzo and Ninja.

About the Illustrator

Rachel Cellinese is a graphic designer and illustrator living in Los Angeles. She also uses her artistic talents to help organizations such as 826LA and Big Class New Orleans. This is her first full-length children’s book. One day she hopes to adopt a dog of her own!
