True Tails from the Dog Park By Max & Luther

When I was first contacted by Kari Sherman (one of the co-HUMAN authors of True Tails from the Dog Park By Max & Luther, the other co-HUMAN author is Carey Laubenberg), I was under the mistaken assumption that this was a book for children. I couldn’t have been more wrong! (and PLEASANTLY so!)

True Tails from the Dog Park “is a fun and charming collection of stories, tips and rules for dogs and dog owners that will keep you laughing. The stories are written from the perspective of two dogs, Max and Luther who have become best friends since meeting at the dog park.”

Who are Max and Luther?

From Max and Luther’s website: Kari Sherman and Carey Laubenberg met one year ago at the dog park when their two dogs, Max and Luther became instant friends. They soon discovered they had much more in common than just their dogs. After constantly regaling each other with their funny stories and encounters at the dog park, dog beach and other places, they decided that these stories would make a fun book. “True Tails from the Dog Park” was born. They are currently working on books II and III in this series, coming in 2015.

Max Sherman is a two-and-a-half-year old Puggle, (half-Beagle, half-Pug) with an all-beagle personality! Max is not only food obsessed, but he LOVES to steal purses! He is super active, (he requires a whopping THREE hours of exercise per day!)

Luther Laubenberg (“Lou”)– is a one-and-a-half-year old Olde English Bulldog. He is originally from Nunley Ranch in Pelham, Tennessee, he now resides in San Diego, California. Luther loves little dogs and puppies at the park, he is a “big lug” who is like a freight train, slow to get going, and even slower to stop! He is a lover though, and is the “sweetest and gentlest of souls.”

True Tails from the Dog Park is packed full of tips such as:

  • Dog Park Rules:Food Faux Paw
  • Dog Park Rules: Poop Realities
  • Dog Park Rules: Practices for People

There are pages titled “Ask Max” that lists helpful snippets and information such as:

  • Always pick up your dog’s poop
  • Always have extra poop bags
  • Teaching children the proper way to greet dogs
  • The dog park is not a day care, watch your dog!

all are printed to look like a page in an old newspaper and have so much information that there is just too much to list here!

The illustrations by Julie Ann Stricklin,  are completely delightful! They are  often humorous, colorful and are a huge reason why this book is simply loaded with charm!

The stories shared by Kari Sherman and Carey Laubenberg are funny, and those who frequent dog parks and beaches will easily be able to relate and commiserate!

If you are looking for a book that mixes humor with valuable information, then this 47 page, paper-back delight is for you!

It would make the perfect gift for the dog lovers in your life!

Fun New Book:Pastry for Poodles: Gourmet Recipes for Dogs & Dog Lovers by Chef Fifi Lefay has hit the shelves!

“There’s more to the kitchen than your food bowl”

Oui! Oui! Ma Cherie or Mon Cher! I am beyond excited to be one of a pack of dog bloggers who have had the pleasure of reading  Pastry for Poodles: Gourmet Recipes for Dogs & Dog Lovers by Chef Fifi Lefay! When Fifi’s Manager, John Morris, approached me asking if I would like a copy, being the “foodie” that I am, I JUMPED at the chance!

If you love food, (you don’t have to be an Iron Chef in the kitchen to enjoy this witty book, and I promise, Gordon Ramsay will NOT yell at you if you aren’t! He doesn’t even read this blog, but I digress…), and you love dogs, or KNOW someone who does, you MUST grab a copy (or two or three or four) to give as gifts!

Pastry for Poodles is the  first in a series of 8 “gourmet” cookbooks  (“Cookbooks from The Canine Cuisine Team”) written for dogs by dogs.  (Yes! I am planning on featuring all 8 books!), Specifically, by the celebrity dog chefs from The Chow TV Network. (Check out their website here!)

Each of the 8 books features a different breed of dog as author/chef and addresses a different world-class cuisine.  In Pastry for Poodles, various delectable French pastries are prepared  by Parisian Chef-Maitre Fifi LeFay.

Chef LeFay presents each recipe (which I hear you CAN prepare, but the recipes aren’t written for that purpose, they are meant to be FUN and might not even be edible!), in a delightfully funny (to humans! To dogs this is serious business!) manner. If Julia Child were alive today Chef-Maitre Fifi LeFay would give her a run for her money let me tell you! If you have a zany sense of humor like I do, this is right up your alley!

Thankfully Fifi believes in using ingredients that many of us have in our own kitchens and star ingredients are store-bought puff pastry, fillo dough and store-bought pie crust!

When I began reading the recipes I nearly fell on the floor laughing at the “doggy” spin that each and every recipe has. These recipe instructions, remember, are written for dogs, by dogs, so they contain instructions that only DOGS understand such as:

  • Pre-heat oven to PRETTY HOT
  • Take a short nap while crust thaws
  • Remember to wash your paws
  • Bake for 2 tummy-rubs or if you smell smoke
  • Bake until cookies start to turn brown and are soft to the paw
  • This recipe calls for lots of eggs, but don’t worry, eggs are good for our coats!
  • Water should be tongue-warm
  • When working with a pastry bag hold it upright with your mouth, remember it isn’t a play toy so watch those teeth!
  • If you need to wait for a long time for something in the oven take a long walk

In Pastry for Dogs you will find recipes such as:

  • Fresh Blueberry Tart with a Tease
  • Le Croissant
  • Le Napoleon (I really want to make these!)

Pastry for Poodles (and each of the ensuing books in the collection),  includes an author bio, foreword and afterword, six or more scrumptious recipes written from one dog to another, in dog units of measure and with a dog’s sensibility for what tastes good and how many friends to invite over, plus mouth-watering full-color photos of each “dish.” They are Presented with the utmost seriousness, of course, because these dogs are seriously into food!

Now, if your mouth is watering after reading the scrumptious recipe titles listed above, like mine is, (or should I say DROOLING?), grab these links to order! Have an office gift exchange where the item has to be under $25? Need a stocking stuffer, or a filler for one of the Eight Crazy Nights of Chanukah, or a just because gift to brighten a foodie/dog lover’s day?  Pastry for Poodles fits the “bill” perfectly! Dakota and I give it a unanimous FOUR PAWS UP!!

Oh and keep your eyes on this blog for my reviews of ALL of the books in the series!

Book Review:Tales of a French Scent Hound by Debucher Baguette, aka Emma the GBGV

Let me begin by saying I have reviewed TONS of books throughout my years of blogging, and about 99% of the books that I have reviewed were books that were sent to me, UNSOLICITED, I did not pursue the authors seeking to review them. Tales of a French Scent Hound was a different “story” altogether. Being a follower of Emma the GBGV’s blog for some time now, and loving every minute of it, the second I heard that she had published her own book, I was all “over the scent” shall we say? I wrote to Emma and asked permission to review her book, and she was kind enough to send me a copy.

Opening the book I was delighted to see an AUTHENTIC “pawtograph!” The actual pawprint of Emma is  included in the first pages of the book and I knew I was in for a treat!

Tales of a French Scent Hound, as written and told by Emma, is the story of Emma’s life, adorably, hilariously and brilliantly told in HER own words!

The book immediately answers the question, “Just what IS a GBGV!?” If you are anything like I was,  you have no clue, and you will have to read the book to find out!

There are times when I sit down to read a book, that  I just want to  be entertained, I don’t want a heavy plot, I want something bright, fun, well-written and interesting.  If I learn something along the way, it’s that much better. Tales of a French Scent Hound is THAT kind of book.

I found myself completely engrossed with a smile plastered on my face while I enjoyed Emma’s clever writing, some of my favorite chapters were:

Tale One-How It All Began -about Emma’s litter mates, her future “Mom”, and her soon-to-be-new-life in the United States.

Tale Two-Adjusting To My New Life-as told by Emma through the eyes of a puppy. It will have you ooohing and ahhhing, it’s that cute!

You will learn new things by reading:

Tale Six-Exploring Minnesota’s 10,000 Lakes

Tale Thirteen-Off To The Split Rock Lighthouse

Tale Twenty Eight-Road Tripping It To Florida

You will ROAR with laughter when you read:

Tale Fifteen-The Many Loves Of Katie (Emma’s doggy sister who just can’t resist the “boys!”)

Tale Twenty One-What Makes Cats Tick-in which, Emma has a close-up and purrsonal interview with her kitty brother, Bert. This interview is one of a few interviews that are in Tales of a French Scent Hound, the dialogue is deliciously crafted, and is guaranteed to give you some great belly laughs. The interviews have to be one of my favorite parts of this book!

Tale Thirty Eight-Running Emma’s B&B (Bed and Breakfast)

Emma has a most talented “Mom” who takes some of the finest,  and oh-so-fun photographs of her dogs on the web! These insanely creative photographs are featured in this most engaging read, (her utilization of props is pure genius, and she must have the patience of a Saint, because photographing pets is NOT easy). You will fall off of your chair laughing at photos of   Emma in reading glasses,  a Nurse’s outfit,  a Chef’s hat and apron, just to name a few!

It’s Holiday time, and a great way to delight the dog lovers on YOUR gift list would be to purchase Tales of a French Scent Hound.  They can grab a plate of cookies, some nice cold milk, plop the kids on their lap (it’s a great book for the little ones too!), and a dog and/or cat by their side, and find sheer joy in the reading of these tales by one oh-so-NOT ordinary dog!
