Summer Adopt-A-Thon to Feature 50 or More Adoptable Pets

We are happy to present to you the first of two large offsite tented Adopt-a-Thons this summer takes place on Saturday, June 18th  from 10a-4pm in the parking lot in front of Home Depot in Allen Park in the Fairlane Green II shopping mall.  Described locally as “On the Hill”, Home Depot is near the Oakwood boulevard entrance to the mall, just off Southfield freeway.  The Dearborn Animal Shelter plans to have 50 animals or more available for adoption that day including playful kittens, adult cats and all shapes and sizes of dogs.

Attendees will enjoy adoption specials and be able to shop Shelter merchandise and purchase Fido Bakery treats for their canine best friends.  Adoption counselors will be on hand to help visitors find their new best friend, including a meet and greet area to get to know new dog family members in a separate section.

Elaine Greene, Executive Director, Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit, commented “This Adopt-A-Thon kicks off the summer season for us and is similar to bringing a one day “pop-up” Shelter to a highly visible location for one day.  Each year, we find that prospective adopters really appreciate the opportunity to see so many animals showcased under the tent, in an easily accessible place on a Saturday.  It’s a completely different feel they tell us, than seeing the adoptable animals while in the Shelter”.

This is the fourth year that the event is being hosted in the parking lot of Home Depot in Allen Park.  It will also be the location for this year’s second offsite tented Adopt-A-Thon on Saturday, August 13th.

Dearborn Animal Shelter to host Adopt-A-Thon at Westborn Mall. #Michigan

Many adoptable animals in the Dearborn Animal Shelter await the day they find a home to call their own.  This summer is no exception, especially as rescued cats and kittens continue to flow into the Shelter at an unprecedented rate.

To help encourage prospective pet owners to consider adopting, Westborn Mall offered to be the host venue for a special one day Adopt-A-Thon, taking place this Saturday, August 17th from 10am-5pm.   Located at the intersection of Outer Drive and Michigan Avenue, Westborn Mall is very accessible with lots of traffic during the busy Back to School shopping window.

Elaine Greene, Executive  Director, Friends For the Dearborn Animal Shelter said, “Back to School is known as a busy shopping time and it’s a great time to consider bringing home a new pet family member.  Summer vacations are beginning to wind down and your home gets back into a routine, a good time for a furry companion. We hope to find matches this Saturday for homeless animals and families looking for a new loved one.”

The Adopt-A-Thon will be under a large tent in the parking lot in front of Westborn Mall.

Along with the adoptable animals, the Shelter will have adoption counselors on hand, a meet and greet area and reduced adoption fees Saturday only.  There will be specials in the Mall from participating retailers and a radio station appearance from 2pm-4pm by WDVD 96.3.FM’s on-air talent Dana from “Blaine & Allyson in the Morning”.

#PuppyLove Dating Show! Presented by the #ASPCA. Help Shelter Pets Find Homes For Valentine’s Day!

Event to feature adoptable animals, donations to our canine active forces

This election season, it may not seem like there’s much that we all agree on, but there is one thing that brings us all together – our shared respect and admiration for our armed forces. This Veterans Day, Sunday, November 11, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., the Michigan Humane Society (MHS) will honor that tradition by hosting “Pets, Packs and Patriots” a celebration of our two-legged and four-legged veterans, at Petco in Sterling Heights.

“We are forever grateful to the brave men and women who risk their lives to defend our nation,” said Marie Skladd, MHS Director of Community Outreach. “This event is a way for us to say thank you and honor a debt to them that we can never truly repay.”

“Snoopy, a 6-year-old Boston Terrier mix, is ready to honor our armed forces this Veterans Day.”

The event, held at the MHS off-site adoption center at Petco Sterling Heights, will showcase pets who are available for adoption through the “Pets for Patriots” program, which connects animals who face adoption challenges with members of our armed forces who are looking for their new best friend. The program provides heavily discounted adoption fees and veterinary care for the life of the pet.

Local Cub Scouts will be serving refreshments, and attendees will be able to contribute or purchase items for care packages that will be donated to Desert K9s, an organization that provides supplies and protective gear to military canines deployed overseas. Examples of needed items include collapsible food and water bowls, large Kong-style toys, dry dog biscuits and more.

“Without these four-legged soldiers, thousands more of our brave men and women would lose their lives,” said Sandie Smith, Desert K-9s Coordinator.

Petco is located at 13701 Lakeside Circle in Sterling Heights. For more information about this event, please visit or call 1-866-MHUMANE (648-6263), Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Michigan Humane Society is a private, nonprofit organization which cares for more than 100,000 animals each year, while working to end companion animal homelessness, provide the highest quality service and compassion to the animals entrusted to our care, and to be a leader in promoting humane values.
