We “took a licking but will keep on ticking!” Our 2013 WordPress Report

2013 was an interesting year for Dakota and I. We were chugging along well until we made the transition from FREE WordPress to PAID WordPress in July of 2013. We lost a TON of subscribers in the process who we are STILL trying to regain!!

We began this blog late in 2011 and DO NOT, (NOR WILL WE EVER) blog every day of the week. Don’t believe in it, don’t like it and won’t do it!  (We might have a fluke week in there somewhere where we blogged every day but trust us, it is NOT the norm!)

So, try not to laugh TOO hard when you look at our report from 2013…..it’s pretty darned funny!!

Now, if we stay put in 2014  (not sure about that one yet either!) then maybe we can get some numbers back! Thanks so much to all who take the time to make us a part of their busy day!

Barks and licks and love,

Dakota and Caren

  1. Next year I am going to be on the top of that comment list! I am so thankful that you don’t believe or want to blog everyday. It makes me feel better about my own blogging skills. The stress of putting out a post everyday causes me to bite my nails and you know how I love my nails polished!
    Have a pawtastic day!!

  2. Oh, Carma Poodale had just said what I wanted to say although I don’t have my nails polished. LOL!

Thanks for being there, Dakota and you know we always love you and your mom, dad and your little kitty brother (I’m still not so sure whether I can really take a kitty as a friend but I can imagine he is a DOG just like you, then problem SOLVED)

Ahhhh thanks Eva!! Haven’t read Carma’s comment yet, will go and check it out. You KNOW we LOVE YOU!!! Barks and licks and love, Dakota

  3. I feel ya Dakota. I did the whole switching around thing too, and know I lost some readers. But hey, the way I figure it they were probably just numbers and not real friends anyways! Their loss! 😉

    • Dakota says:

Ann you have crazy good numbers! Cody’s blog has good numbers, mine never did but it’s ok! I agree with you about some being “just numbers”……

  4. First, I think you are doing quite well. Second, you have 233 posts in a year and I have 120 in a year and a half, so let’s talk about not blogging everyday. It is difficult when you work and have a wife and cats that need attention, although I have been better lately. Third, I have several self hosted blogs but I started WordPress with Bad Cat Chris on WordPress.com and just decided to buy the domain from them to avoid the conversion problems. I did, however. switch my cycling blog from wordpress.com to self hosted but that didn’t have many subscribers anyway. Here’s hoping for a great 2014.

Charles thanks!!! I do have two blogs too which makes it quite hard to keep up (especially with fielding/responding to comments on both). I do not have a full time job, blogging IS my full time job and yep I am married with household responsibilities but it’s all good!!! Thanks for the encouragement!

  5. Congrats on a great year! I actually could blog 7 days because I have a lot to say I guess…lol.

I am so feeling your pain about the stats loss. Luckily, I moved Something Wagging to self-hosted pretty quickly, before I had many readers. But the redesign I did for Hands on Home Buyer caused my monthly views to drop by 2/3 despite my web designer and several SEO experts telling me that was impossible.

It’s easy to say stats shouldn’t matter but it never feels good to see them drop.

On the other hand, you have a very passionate following, especially evidenced in your frequent commenters. I hope that makes you feel good.

    Here’s wishing you a wonderful 2014!

Thanks Pamela and yep I hear you about being told something totally different from what actually happened. It is all ok though because we have Cat Chat With Caren and Cody too which does quite well. It has skyrocketed up this year so that makes me happy. I have a WONDERFUL fan base of those that I do have and that means more than anything, you are right! Wishing you a wonderful 2014 too!

We switched to self hosted the end of May so our thing from WP was not pretty either. We did blog like 28 days in December with the Advent Calendar, it was a challenge for sure and we learned that we just couldn’t keep up that pace with Mom working a real job to make money. We are now back to somewhere between 3 and 5 posts a week. It is so time consuming…we love it but just don’t have the time for daily. Amazing that we are in your top comment writers. That makes this GBGV smile 🙂

Yep I am with you about the 3 to 5 posts per week. Sometimes I have 6 but that is rare. I don’t have a “real job” but I have a “real” other blog (which you know lol). I DO THANK YOU for being such great furiends!!!

That’s a really cool report! You even got some fireworks! Blogger doesn’t do anything fancy like that 🙁

I left 106 comments?! I guess I really do spend a lot of time on my computer (my dogs and husband keep telling me that, but I didn’t believe them).

I can’t do a post everyday either, and sometimes I struggle to put out a few a week. I tend to go thru blogging phases – one week I have a lot to say, the next, writers block….

  14. I think you had a great year. I think I started following you for that candy dish giveaway. I enjoy your blog. Do you think it was worth it going to the paid wordpress. Any advantages? So far since I don’t know much the free one works for me but wanted to hear your reason why you pay now. Have a great 2014!

    • Dakota says:

Hi my friend, NO…short answer…NO…….lol. I switched to be able to have advertising (and badges) on Dakota’s blog that I couldn’t have on Free WP. Don’t go by my opinion though, I am sure there are TONS of others who disagree with me but I regret that when I started Dakota’s blog I didn’t just put it on Blogger where my cat blog is.

  15. I’m with Millie & Walter – I don’t always leave a comment, but I always read! 🙂

I’m sorry you lost followers when you moved over to WP. Darn thing is, I have since discovered that WP.com offers a service to help move your followers. Woulda been nice to know that before, but maybe it’s a new service. It’s good news for people who want to move now.

    Happy New Year!

I plead the fifth M.K. I have another blog as well, Cat Chat With Caren and Cody that is on Blogger and I MUCH prefer Blogger for a variety of reasons. I don’t think anyone should “swear” that you can bring everyone because it isn’t true.

  20. Wow! That’s so cool to be able to look back at 2013’s history like that!!!

  21. We left the blog without posting for almost three months recently as you know (I think) and we don’t blog every day either! That is the main reason I stopped blogging because as I have my cats blog as well, I felt stress of thinking I need to update both my blogs every day and this is on top of school revision, spending time with the family and getting the dogs walked, having tea, a bath and all the rest of the daily routine after school!! But now I know I am not the only one who doesn’t blog every day, I feel much better about my own Blogging Routine!

Thanks for the post and please stay with us on Blogger/Wordpress – we don’t comment on blogs much but we try to stop by as much as possible and we LOVE Dakota’s Den!

Awwww thanks so much Jessica! I have a cat blog as well and nope, I don’t blog every day on that one either and I never will! I don’t like the idea of blogging just to blog which is how I view a 7 day schedule. I tend to appreciate some blogs more when I DON’T see them every day! We love you too and we thank you!

  22. How could anyone not want to visit your blog?! We love the time we spend in Dakota’s Den! I’m sorry to hear you lost subscribers in the process. I want to make that transition too, but I’m so worried and intimidated by all the change!
I love that you don’t blog every day and happily accept that! Sometimes I think it would be better if I did get to the blog daily, but then again life is all about balance. So thank you for being a good role model for that! Happy New Year!

I think you did great! And I imagine your numbers will get back up to where they were eventually. I cannot imagine blogging everyday. I don’t even know how you handle two blogs! I get in 3 posts per week, sometimes 4, and I couldn’t possibly do anymore unless I quit my job! Unfortunately, that’s not an option, unless I can get the blog to pay more! 🙂

We will always follow your blog but we may not catch every post. We have no schedule for posting, reading or commenting on blogs. Do it your way is what we say and keep it comfortable and fun for you. We love you all and hope 2014 brings all wonderful things your way. Hugs and nose kisses

  31. Love it! We have had a love/hate relationship with WordPress but have to say it’s been more love so far. And as far as blogging schedule goes….we worship your honesty! With two blogs we don’t know how you do it and do it all so well. We really had to get ourself on a schedule and are now trying to get a few weeks ahead of ourselves with our editorial calendar. It’s hard work…and then if life throws you a curve it’s even harder. Here is to 2014! You rock!!!

  32. No matter what the numbers are, we LOVE you and your blog, Caren and Dakota! And if it is any comfort to you, we only have ONE blog, and we just are not able to post every day. Hugs!

I lost all my followers when I switched to self-hosted too. Thankfully for me, I’ve decided on a new direction and I’m not so much focused on stats and advertisers anymore.

Did you put a redirect on your old site? I’ve had one on mine, but I’m still not up to my previous subscribers. The other thing I think about is a lot more people are using readers to get their subscriptions and as far as I know there is no way to calculate how many people are reading in that fashion.

But stick with it my friend, you’ll get back up there!
